What are UV Air Purifiers?

Updated: Apr 26

Clean air is ever important! Think about it–you breathe it all day every day from the moment you are born until the day you die. Of course, consumption of anything of this magnitude means that it’s important that whatever is going into your body is clean and healthy.

Dirty air is scary–it can cause a host of issues if not kept in check. Luckily for us, we live in 2023, where we have so many air-purifying options, including the almighty UV air purifier!

What is a UV air purifier?

These purifiers capture air within a chamber and push it through a filter where it is then exposed to UV-C light which can kill germs, pathogens, viruses, and bacteria. Some more advanced UV air purifiers will even make the captured air go through the process twice over to ensure its purity before releasing it back into the room.

How do they work?

Uv air purifiers use an ultraviolet lamp as part of their primary component. This lamp emits a specific wavelength of light that is able to pass through most substances but is unable to make its way into the human body. When this UV light hits particles in the air, it causes those particles to break down into smaller pieces that are able to be removed from the room through a filtration system.

Are they effective?

The answer to this question is a resounding yes. UV air purifiers are able to eliminate a variety of different airborne particles from the air. This includes not only bacteria and viruses, but also pollen, mold spores, pet dander, and more.

In terms of effectiveness against allergen particles like dust mites, mold spores or mildew, or even fungal infections in the home’s structure; these filters do an excellent job as well. When it comes to odors; most units are also able to effectively remove them as well, although this ability can range depending on each and every unit’s quality.

According to a 2021 study, those UV air purifiers that use HEPA filters in conjunction do a great job at removing mold spores and bacteria from the air, making them very effective air purifiers.

Another great pro about UV air purifiers is their extremely quiet operation. Many models can make virtually no noise as they work, making them a great and seamless addition to the home.

However, it’s extremely important to note one con about UV air purifiers: they can emit ozone. What is ozone? Ozone is the colorless gas in our atmosphere that provides a barrier between us and the harmful UV rays of the sun. However, ozone at ground level is not the best thing to have and can result in experiencing symptoms such as:

  • Coughing

  • Sore throat

  • Inflammation in the airways

  • Worsening of respiratory illnesses (asthma, COPD)

How much do UV air purifiers cost?

The price of these little machines can run a very wide gamut, as is the story with most things! Cost most certainly depends on the size of the area in which you want to place the machine where it can also function optimally. Likewise, brand and quality matter as well when it comes to pricing.

It’s also worth noting that many affordable air purifiers also feature UV light features as an add-on, but this does not necessarily make it a UV air purifier by nature.

On the lower end of the spectrum, you can get an affordable air purifier in the $70-$90 range that is fit for a large room. Likewise, if you’re looking for an air purifier fit for a king, you could expect to shell out anywhere from $500-$700. The bottom line

Air quality is extremely important, and it can affect every part of your health if you let it fall to the wayside. Learning about air filtration and purification in your home is the first stepping stone to securing cleaner and healthier air for you and your family.
