Should I Use a Humidifier in the Winter?

Updated: Jun 24

Cold air, tinsel, jingle bells, bloody noses, and death-valley-esque dried lips. It’s winter!

During winter, most of us tend to have our heaters and furnaces running to pump our home full of warm air to keep us comfortable. However, there is one drawback of this cozy time of year: it really dries us out!

In order to prevent your skin from becoming a salt flat, to keep your nose from bleeding, and to keep the sensitive skin on your face from getting dry and cracky, using a humidifier during the winter is one of the best and easiest ways to keep yourself looking and feeling sharp.

What are the benefits of using a humidifier in the winter?

There are many reasons why you should use a humidifier in the winter. The most obvious one is that it will keep your skin moist and soft, which can be very beneficial for your health.

You can relieve dry skin: Dry skin is not only uncomfortable but also harmful to your body. If you have sensitive skin or if you suffer from any kind of dermatitis, then it is highly recommended to use a humidifier in the winter as this will help to reduce any kind of inflammation and redness on your face or hands due to the ultra-dry environment that our heaters can create. You can get rid of dry patches on the surface of your skin without any problems at all simply by using a humidifier regularly.

Helps prevent bloody noses: The dry air from our heaters knows no bounds! If you are a frequent nose bleeder, then you probably already know how bad they can get in the winter as the skin inside your nose is much drier during this time, making nose bleeds more frequent during the winter. Running a humidifier can drastically reduce the amount of nose bleeds you have while keeping the skin inside your nose moisturized and less likely to crack.

It helps with asthma: People who suffer from asthma often feel very irritated by cold air while they breathe, so they need something that can make them feel comfortable during this process; therefore those with asthma or other illnesses that result in sensitive respiratory systems should try a humidifier that has special filters so that these filters don’t cause allergic reactions like sneezing or coughing after running them through.

More comfortable sleep: We’ve all been there–the air is too dry and you can feel each scratchy breath inside your nose or your throat and it makes it that much harder to fall, and stay, asleep. With a humidifier, you can virtually say goodbye to those very unpleasant sensations, which is not only good for your skin, nose, and throat but good for you so that you can fall asleep and stay asleep without focusing on the passage of air through your dry nostrils.

It warms up your space a little more: Unintended bonus–humidifiers can help make your space feel warmer in the winter! Humid air tends to feel warmer than dry air, so running a humidifier can help the overall feel of your space feel warmer during the cold winter months, while also keeping your skin hydrated.

Slows down germs: Viruses like the cold and the flu flourish in dry environments. The more humid the environment, the harder it is for these viruses to survive. Therefore, using a humidifier can actually help stop the spread of the viruses and keep them at bay.

The bottom line

Using a humidifier during the winter has a ton of advantages: healthier skin, fewer nose bleeds, and better for your respiratory health! Humidifiers can be an inexpensive addition to your home that can really pack a punch in the difference that it makes in your health and home.
